AlertDispatcher Version 4.5 New Release & Security Announcement

We are pleased to announce the release of AlertDispatcher Version 4.5 (SMS/Email Escalation).

Key highlights of this new version include:

1. Emergency send pause/resume button.
2. New message escalation features (acknowledge alerts on workstation, exclusion keywords for message escalation).
3. App-aware High Availability (active-active failover cluster/daily heartbeat scheduler/secondary email server).
4. Send message filter (rewrite the content, redirect or to convert into another format, e.g. SNMP Traps).
5. LDAP/AD integration (for usage reporting/usage control).

We've heard this many times from users that they didn't receive their alerts because the SIM card or modem is not working, the network or Exchange server is down so email alerts can't be sent, or the server/network/power supply was down and no one knew about it!

An effective alert system should be able to handle contingencies in which hardware, networking and even cloud services can malfunction. For Version 4.5, we've focused on overcoming single points of failure using App-Aware High Availability and improving error reporting.

Security Announcement

The Heartbleed bug has affected many major internet services (Email/FTP), websites, software, phone apps and even Android devices using OpenSSL Version 1.0.1 through 1.0.1f, making it virtually impossible to determine if one's passwords have been leaked. If you're using shared passwords on Internet forums and social media portals, you're recommended to change and use different passwords for critical services (e.g. email accounts, FTP, RDP logins) and also enable 2-factor authentication where possible. You should change your password only after the affected service has patched their OpenSSL vulnerability.

All previous versions of AlertDispatcher uses OpenSSL Version 0.9.8h where SSL/TLS encryption is required, e.g. sending email using SSL/TLS. Fortunately, OpenSSL version 0.9.8h is NOT AFFECTED by the Heartbleed vulnerability. We have updated the OpenSSL libraries used in AlertDispatcher Version 4.5 to the latest version 1.0.1g.

We have also created a basic security guide for securing your AlertDispatcher installation -
